Althia McLaughlin, MA, LCMHC

Bilingual Psychotherapist

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism/Professional Writing from The College of New Jersey, I worked in New York City as a writer and journalist. I enjoyed telling stories. But it was not by coincidence that my birth name ALTHIA means “healer” and I eventually felt drawn to a new profession that involved healing. I changed careers to become a psychotherapist because I recognized that I wanted to use my gift of empathy to not only hear stories, but to also help others heal and rewrite the stories of their lives. I graduated with a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Marymount University in Northern Virginia.

I have received extensive training in various trauma therapies including (but not limited to) Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). And I am a certified Distance Credentialed Counselor, which means I have specialized training in providing effective therapy remotely (telemental health). I have successfully completed immigration evaluation training with The Immigration Evaluation Training Center.

I offer in-person and Telehealth psychotherapy and immigration psychological evaluations in English and/or Spanish. The daughter of an immigrant, I have a passion for serving immigrant communities and I am grateful that my work as an immigration evaluator allows me the opportunity to be of service in a truly meaningful way.

I am an integrative, eclectic psychotherapist, using more than one evidence-based theoretical approach to address my clients’ individual needs. The approaches I use most often include EMDR, Attachment Theory, CBT, Depth Psychotherapy, and Somatic Therapy.

About You

I work collaboratively with my clients, reminding them that they are not alone on their journey. While gently challenging my clients to see things from new perspectives and to step outside of their comfort zones, I also focus on making sure they feel seen and heard along the way. My goal is for you to feel grounded, supported, and inspired while we work together. Because each client is different, I offer a specialized treatment approach for each individual I work with.

I believe that you are actually the expert of your own life. It is my job to bring your inner wisdom to the forefront. Therapy can be scary—but exciting. It will cause you to look at things you may have never looked at before. You will start to notice patterns, triggers, and motivations that you may not have seen in the past. After exploring things during our sessions, you will be encouraged to go beyond talking and feeling and begin to actually do! We will move at your pace. And when you’re ready, I may challenge you with exercises to do in between sessions so that you can put what you have learned into action. Little by little, change will start to happen! And little by little you will begin to trust your inner wisdom as you rewrite the story of your life!
